Meet Ishmael

Class/Grade 7
Age: 15
BIRTHDAY: 1/1/2010
Number of Siblings: 6
Favorite color: Black
Favorite food: Ugali
What do you like about School: Reading
What do you want to be when you grow up: Farmer
Hobby: Running
Hero: Messi
Tuition: $492/yr or $41/month
His Story: Meet Ishmael, and you’ll see it instantly—this kid is a stud. At 15 and heading into 7th grade, he’s the kind of young man who carries quiet confidence with him. When we arrived, he was playing with a pack of younger neighborhood kids, and even though he towered over most of them, he fit right in. He wasn’t just playing—he was leading. Encouraging. Laughing. Watching out for them. You could tell the younger ones adored him, and he carried himself with the gentleness of a natural mentor.
Ishmael loves the color black, could eat ugali every day, and enjoys reading. He has 6 siblings and dreams of becoming a farmer someday. And while is may not be a distance runner — he made that clear with a quick "no thank you" to a 5K —- he lights up when you mention a 400m sprint. That spark alone tells you he has a drive, discipline, and a competitive heartbeat in him.
His mother stood nearby as he filled out his form — smiling, steady, and deeply proud of her son. She has endured more than most should ever have to: an abusive past marriage, relentless hardship, and an overwhelming pressure to keep her children in school. But she never gave up. And that fierce love shows in her children — especially Ishmael. In a place where life is not easy, this home was full of joy. Full of hop. Full of gratitude. Ishmael carries that same light — a young leader ready to run his race, one strong step at a time.

Number of Siblings: 10
Favorite color: Red
Favorite food: ugali
What do you like about School: Reading

His Story: Meet Nahashon, a thoughtful and steady 12-year-old whose gentle presence instantly draws you in. He’s entering grade 7, loves the color red, and could happily eat ugali every day of the week. When he’s not reading—something he truly enjoys—you’ll find him dreaming about becoming a soldier someday. His hero is a local policeman, and the way he talks about bravery and service tells you he has that same quiet strength inside of him.
When we arrived at his home, the yard was alive—children laughing, goats wandering freely, life bubbling around every corner. But inside the small one-room home sat something different: stillness, and a mother named Sarah. She sat beside her dear friend (also named Sarah), who has been faithfully helping her care for some of her older children. Their closeness radiated warmth, but the weight this mother carried was unmistakable.
Sarah is raising 10 children alone. Her husband abandoned the family without warning, leaving her to shoulder everything—food, rent, clothing, school fees, all on her own. As she told us her story, tears streamed down her face. She asked why this had happened, why she had been left to do this alone. And yet even through heartbreak, her strength shone like gold. She gave the best, tightest hugs—hugs that spoke of resilience and deep, deep love.
When we told her that her son Nahashon had been chosen for full sponsorship, joy filled the room. Nahashon’s face lit up instantly—hope blooming where heaviness had been. This young man, disciplined and well-behaved, carries the kind of courage that changes families.

What do you like about School: Singing
What do you want to be when you grow up: N/A
Hobby: Helping with house Chores
Hero: N/A
Tuition: $492/yr or $41/month
Her Story: Meet Sharon Cherono, a bright and joy-filled 13-year-old whose laughter arrives before she does. Her favorite color is white, she loves rice, and she has 5 siblings who adore her. Sharon loves to sing, loves to help with house chores, and has a heart that overflows with delight. She also has special needs - and now, for the very first time, she will be able to attend a special needs school where she can learn, thrive, and be supported in all the ways she deserves.
When we arrived at her home, which sits close to the busy highway, her mother shared her daily worry. She feared Sharon might wander too close to the road, and the weight of keeping her safe - while juggling casual jobs and caring for all the children - was enormous. But Sharon herself? She was not carrying a single worry. She bounced, she jumped, she giggled, and before we even left, she had prayed for our team several times. Her joy was contagious, the kind of joy that reaches deep into your soul and reminds you of God's goodness. Her father stood quietly nearby, saying very little, but tears rolled down his cheeks when he heard that his daughter would receive a sponsorship.
The possibility of a school designed to help her grow, belong, and be "like others," as he put it, moved him in a way words couldn't express. Her mother told us how Sharons loves to be a part of daily life and daily chores and she was sure that Sharon would do great at this new school. This girl - this darling, happy, glowing light — is exactly why hope matters. Her future is about to open wide. And she is more than ready.

What do you like about School: Reading
What do you want to be when you grow up: Painter
Hobby: Football
Hero: God
Tuition: $492/yr or $41/month
His Story: Prince Jesse is 13, thoughtful, bright, and full of quiet determination. His favorite color is red, and he could eat chapati every day of the week. He loves reading when he's at school, and he dreams big of being a pilot someday. He's a natural leader with a gentle confidence, and when he isn't reading or studying, you'll find him outside playing football with a grin that lights up the whole field. And when asked who his hero is, he simply said, "God." But beneath Jesse's strength is a story filled with both love and loss.
Jesse lives with his mother, Veronica, and his siblings in a very small one bedroom home. Veronica gently shared their story with us - how she and Oscar had created a beautiful family and they enjoyed the life they had created. Then unexpectedly in July everything shifted. Oscar passed away leaving Veronica to raise all the children alone. As we sat with her, tears slid down her checks as she told us "He was her everything… and life was hard to do without him."
The thickness of grief was in the air of this one-bedroom home, but in the midst of it was a strong little boy named Jesse that remains hopeful. Steady. Brave. We believe he shall soar high someday and we are so happy to have him as part of the Simba family.

He loves ugali with vegetables, he likes to play soccer, and he genuinely enjoys studying—yes, studying is his hobby. He wants to be an accountant someday, and the discipline and determination in him make you believe it's possible.
When we first arrived at the home, Monica — their mother— was not there, but Edwin welcomed us with a gentle steadiness and you could quickly see that he was the anchor of this entire family. He was going to school and working casual jobs to provide daily meals and stability for his younger siblings. Their father is not present, and Edwin has quietly stepped into a role far beyond his years. He carries it with such humility, such love. He is one who makes sure his siblings eat. He is the one who keeps the home steady.
He is a bright young man with the responsibility of a father and yet, even with so much on his shoulders, Edwin remains hopefully. Determined. Full of potential. Sponsorship for him isn't just an opportunity for him — it is a relief and a chance to change his whole family.
Meet Nicholas

Class/Grade: 4
Age: 10
BIRTHDAY: 5/13/2015
Number of Siblings: 7
Favorite color: Yellow
Favorite food: Rice
What do you like about School: Football
What do you want to be when you grow up: Footballer
Hobby: Running
Hero: Ronaldo
Tuition: $492/yr or $41/month
His Story: Nicholas is ten years old with a tender spirit and eyes that carry stories far beyond his age. His favorite color is yellow, he loves rice, and he likes soccer—both at home and at school. He says running is his hobby, and his hero is Ronaldo, which fits perfectly for a boy who seems built for movement and resilience.
But Nicholas has endured more than most children his age. And you could see it. As we shared with him the opportunity for sponsorship— this chance to go to school and finally have stability — tears rolled down his face. Not the kind of tears you see from excitement or surprise… these were deeper. They felt like the kind of tears that come when a child has carried hurt quietly for too long. Nicholas has not had consistent access to school. In fact, he would initially walk himself to school and sneak in and sit in a desk just to learn and finally the teachers let him into the classroom even though his was not able to pay the fees because they could see school was a stable place for Nicholas.
His older brother Edwin does everything he can to care for him, but there is still such heaviness in Nicholas that makes you want to protect him, encourage him, and remind him he is worthy of joy.
